Worship

The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) is a radical, contemporary and free-thinking faith organisation whose roots are in Christianity.

Nowadays we are very diverse. Although most modern day Quakers see Jesus as a great spiritual teacher and his words as a guide to action there are many different views amongst us. However whether we are a ‘theist’ or ‘non-theist’ Quaker we all place special value on actively living the four Quaker testimonies of equality, simplicity, truth and peace.

Ipswich Quakers believe in an inclusive faith –  which celebrates and affirms every person and does not discriminate. We will continue to challenge any discrimination against people on grounds of disability, economic power, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, learning disability, mental health, neurodiversity, or sexuality. We believe in a faith community which welcomes  accepts, supports and values individuals and serves all people.

Beliefs

Quaker faith is a search for truth, not an arrival.

We don’t offer neat creeds or doctrine. Instead, we try to help each other work out how we should live. All people are welcome and accepted at a Quaker meeting.

Quakerism is almost 400 years old. It’s the common name for the Religious Society of Friends. It grew out of Christianity and today we also find meaning and value in other faiths and traditions. We recognise that there’s something transcendent and precious in every person. Different Quakers use different words to describe this, but we all believe we can be in contact with it and encounter something beyond our individual selves.

Quakers don’t use traditional religious structures or paid ministers. We share responsibility for what we do because everyone has a valuable contribution to make.

Quaker meetings for worship can be held anywhere, at any time. Every meeting begins in silence. We use it to open ourselves to the wisdom that comes out of stillness. It enriches us and shapes us, individually and collectively. This is what we mean by ‘worship’. You can read more about how we worship, but the only way to understand it fully is to go to a meeting.

Alternatively come along on any Sunday and join our ‘Meeting for Worship’ which starts at 10.30am and finishes at 11.30am, and is followed by refreshments and a chat.

You do not have to be in unity with Quakers on every issue to be a part of our Meetings.

All are welcome, children especially. After a quarter of an hour of Meeting children are invited to the children’s room with their carer to play or read, as an hour is a long time to sit quietly!

We are also holding in-reach discussion groups on the second Sunday morning of each month:

11th May, 8th June, 13th July, 10th August and 14th September.

They will begin around 9.15am and finish at 10.00am. We will be looking at the book that Andrew put together and also Quaker Faith and Practice.

For more information about our Meetings for Worship take a look at our Beliefs page.
